Everyday Care
Denture Care
A little daily care keeps your dentures clean, comfortable, and long-lasting. Here's what we recommend.

Daily cleaning
- Rinse after every meal. Even a quick rinse under running water removes loose food and prevents buildup.
- Brush your dentures dailywith a soft denture brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser. Never use regular toothpaste — it's too abrasive and will scratch your denture.
- Clean over a towel or a basin of water. Dentures are fragile. A short drop on a hard counter can chip or crack them.
Overnight soaking
Most dentures should be soaked overnight in a denture-cleaning solution or plain cool water. This keeps them from drying out and losing their shape. Never soak in hot water — heat can warp the denture.
Keep your mouth healthy too
Even if you wear a full denture and have no remaining teeth, your mouth still needs daily care:
- Brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth every morning with a soft toothbrush before putting your dentures in.
- Give your gums a rest by removing your dentures for several hours each day — most patients do this overnight.
- Rinse your mouth after meals, even when wearing dentures.
Things to avoid
- Regular toothpaste — too abrasive for denture acrylic.
- Hot water — will warp your denture out of shape.
- Bleach — can whiten or weaken denture materials if used incorrectly.
- Stiff-bristled brushes — these scratch the surface and create places for stains and bacteria to hide.
- DIY repairs— never try to glue, file, or adjust your denture yourself. Bring it to us — we'll fix it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular toothpaste to clean my dentures?+
No. Regular toothpaste is too abrasive and will scratch the denture surface, creating places for stains and bacteria to hide. Use a non-abrasive denture cleanser and a soft denture brush instead.
Should I soak my dentures overnight?+
Yes. Most dentures should be soaked overnight in a denture-cleaning solution or plain cool water to keep them from drying out and losing their shape. Never use hot water, as heat can warp the denture.
How often should I clean my dentures?+
Rinse them after every meal to remove loose food, and brush them thoroughly at least once a day. A daily cleaning routine prevents buildup and keeps your denture looking and feeling fresh.
Do I still need to see the dentist if I wear full dentures?+
Absolutely. Even without natural teeth, you need regular exams at Shenandoah Dental Center to check your gum health, screen for oral cancer, and make sure your denture still fits properly.
What should I do if my denture cracks or chips?+
Bring it to us right away. Never try to glue, file, or adjust your denture yourself. DIY repairs can damage the denture further or harm your mouth. We can often fix small issues in a single short visit.
Why do my dentures feel loose after a few years?+
Your jawbone slowly changes shape over time, especially after teeth are lost. A denture that fit well initially may need to be relined or adjusted. Call us if your denture starts feeling loose or uncomfortable.
