Why prevention wins

Every cavity, crown, or root canal you never need is a win for your health, your time, and your wallet. Preventative care is almost always cheaper, faster, and less invasive than reactive treatment — and it's the reason we obsess over routine visits.

What's included

  • Routine cleanings.Every six months, professional removal of plaque and tartar that home brushing can't reach. Learn more about prophylaxis →
  • Comprehensive exams. A thorough check of every tooth, your gums, your bite, your jaw joints, and the soft tissues of your mouth.
  • Digital X-raysas needed, to see what our eyes can't.
  • Oral cancer screening. Included in every exam. Takes less than a minute. Early detection saves lives.
  • Fluoride treatments for patients at higher risk of decay — particularly kids and patients with dry mouth.
  • Dental sealants for children as their permanent molars come in.
  • Home-care coaching. Small tweaks to brushing and flossing can make a surprising difference.

Why every six months?

Most patients do best on a six-month schedule — frequent enough to catch small issues before they grow, not so frequent it's a burden. Patients with a history of gum disease may benefit from a shorter interval; we'll make that call together.

Get ahead of it

If it's been a while — or even a long while — that's okay. Just come in. We don't lecture. We just get to work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as preventative dental care?+

Preventative care includes routine cleanings, comprehensive exams, digital X-rays, oral cancer screenings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and home-care coaching. It's everything we do to keep problems from starting in the first place.

How often should I come in for a checkup?+

Every six months for most patients. This is frequent enough to catch small issues early and stay ahead of tartar buildup. Patients with a history of gum disease may benefit from a shorter interval.

Is preventative care covered by dental insurance?+

Most dental insurance plans cover routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays at 100% or close to it. Preventative care is the best return on your dental insurance investment. Our team can verify your specific benefits.

What if it's been years since my last dental visit?+

That's okay. Just come in. We don't lecture and we don't judge. We'll take a look at where things stand and make a plan to get you back on track at your own pace.

Do kids need preventative dental care too?+

Absolutely. Children should start seeing the dentist by age one. Regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants during childhood set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Why is preventative care less expensive than reactive treatment?+

A routine cleaning costs a fraction of what a crown or root canal does. Catching a small cavity early means a simple filling instead of a major procedure later. Preventative care at Shenandoah Dental Center saves you time, money, and discomfort.
