First-Visit Questions

What to expect on Day One

Five quick answers about your first appointment. For broader questions on insurance, hours, and services, see the main FAQ.

Reviewed by Dr. Mini Nair, DDS — Updated 2026

How long does the first visit take?+

Plan for about an hour. That covers a comprehensive exam, a set of digital X-rays so Dr. Nair can see what's happening below the surface, a treatment-plan conversation in plain language, and — if your gums are healthy and we've reserved the time — a cleaning the same day. There's no pressure to decide on treatment that day; you're always welcome to take the information home.

Can my old dentist's records be transferred over?+

Yes, and it helps. Call your previous dental office and ask them to send your records (recent X-rays, treatment history, periodontal charting) to Shenandoah Dental Center, 81 Franklin St, Weyers Cave, VA 24486 — phone 540-902-0205. Most offices can fax or email directly. If you have copies on a disc or USB drive, you're welcome to bring those instead.

I haven't been to a dentist in years. Will you judge me?+

No. Many of our new patients haven't seen a dentist in five, ten, even fifteen-plus years, and they tell us their first visit was easier than they expected. Tell us when you book — we'll schedule extra time and, if you're nervous, walk through sedation options before you arrive.

What if I'm bringing my kids to their first visit too?+

Tell us when you book and we'll schedule the family together so you're not making two trips. We see kids of all ages — first teeth through teen years — and our team is patient with little ones who are nervous or new to the dental chair.

Is the office wheelchair-accessible?+

Yes. Our office at 81 Franklin Street is ground-floor accessible — no stairs, no elevators, no long hallways. Free parking sits right outside the front entrance. If you use a wheelchair, walker, or have limited mobility, you'll find our entrance and treatment rooms straightforward to navigate.
